Learn the skill of pitch recognition

As a musician or lover of music in general you may sometimes wonder why others can hear a tune and play it, know what key a song is in or just generally have more skill when it comes to pitch recognition. Training our ear to listen to certain aspects of sound and music can help us gain more knowledge and power when it comes to identifying pitch and relative spacings between intervals in music. If we desire to appreciate and benefit from our music in a greater way, knowledge of absolute and relative pitch could prove worthwhile.

Reasons for improving your listening ability

The following are just a few reasons why we may want to improve our pitch recognition:
  • to play any favorite song by ear
  • be able to sing any note from memory
  • improvise with more confidence
  • know the key signature of a song by ear

Incentive to train your ear

You may desire to train your ear more effectively and get more out of your listening and playing experience. Sometimes we envy the talents of music that others possess. We dont have to accept our current position and that we will never be any better than we currently are. We can take steps to enhance other musical skills and in particular, our ability to pick up the pitch of music and benefit from this ability.
